Large mammals
The Apennine chamois is the symbol of the Park because, a hundred years after the extinction of this ungulate from Gran Sasso, a reintroduction project enabled it to colonize these mountains again, and at present about 500 new individuals have been registered. The fauna heritage of the protected area includes the large herbivores too, such as the deer and the roe deer, as well as their predator par excellence, the Apennine wolf. Among the mammals there are also the European pine marten, the wildcat, the European badger, the beech marten, the European polecat, the crested porcupine.
