Amiternum

Archaeological site

Amiternum was an ancient Italic town founded by Sabines, whose ruins can be found not far from L'Aquila. It was named after river Aterno which used to cross it, even if the town was situated more in the north, on San Vittorino hill, and only later moved to the underlying plain where today you can find an important archaeological area. Further important evidences, including a Roman villa, have been recently found in the surrounding area, near Coppito and Pizzoli.
